Redesigned 2016 Mazda Miata Makes its Global Debut
Mazda says in a press release that the new 2016 Miata “is an iconic model representing Mazda’s vehicle-engineering philosophy—the pursuit of driving pleasure.” The 2016 MX-5 Miata will feature Mazda’s Skyactiv engine technology, which has helped the automaker earn great fuel economy estimates in cars like the 2014 Mazda3 and Mazda6, and will remain “true to the model’s original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can.”
Derek Jenkins, director of design at Mazda North America, said at the reveal that “there’s a lot of pressure to do a great car because of the huge enthusiast base, and because of the legacy the car has behind it.” Pricing and full specifications have yet to be announced, but Jenkins points out that the 2016 Mazda Miata is wider and lower than the current 2015 model.
In comparison with the current Miata, the 2016 Miata’s cabin also receives a significant overhaul. “We really wanted to get a much more aspirational, high-quality feeling,” said Jenkins. “So there’s tremendous attention to detail, fit and finish, bright work, but all the while being completely symmetrical and driver-focused so you can really experience the purity of the driving of this car.”
The 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata currently holds the number one spot in our affordable sports car rankings. The redesigned 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will go on sale globally in 2015.
