GM Boosts Incentives on Pickups

"General Motors Corp. is boosting incentives on pickups and SUVs while holding down such spending on cars," North American sales chief Mark LaNeve told the Detroit Free Press in an interview published this morning. "GM is offering cash incentives of as much as $6,500 on 2007 and 2008 large pickups this month to clear slower-selling older models from dealers." According to the AP, LaNeve "said that automakers were also much more disciplined in 2007 about the use of incentives, which tend to artificially pull sales ahead. So more buyers could be looking for a car this year after not getting a deal in 2007."

Bloomberg explains that the planned pickup rebates "are a combination of existing offers and dealer and cash inducements for some versions of the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche pickups." GM spokesman John McDonald said, "Through Feb. 13, GM is offering to take $2,000 off pickups made on or before Sept. 1, in addition to existing rebates of up to $3,500, for the largest diesel versions of the trucks." Pickup sales have fallen industry wide over the last year, leaving many manufacturers with a glut of leftover '07 models on dealer lots.
