Consumer Reports has released its "Top Picks" for 2008. The magazine says the winners "are the most well-rounded models in their categories," measured by test drives, safety testing, and predicted reliability.
The 2008 Honda Accord wins top honors among Family Sedans, and Toyotas Prius is once again the winner in the Green Car category. MSNBC notes that the Accord knocked last year's winner, the Nissan Altima, from the top spot because "the Altima lacked electronic stability control, a safety feature that was required for ‘top pick' status," for the first time this year. The Detroit News adds, "Asian automakers including South Korea's Hyundai dominated" the list, "winning all but one of the top 10 picks and sweeping the top three overall manufacturing honors." Hyundai notched its first-ever wins, as "the Hyundai Elantra SE snagged the honor for best small sedan and the Hyundai Santa Fe was dubbed best mid-sized SUV." According to CNBC, however, "the overall quality of American models is improving. In fact, 90 percent of models are rated average or better by Consumer Reports." TheCarConnection provides scores by manufacturer, adding, "If you put your faith in Consumer Reports, you'll be heading over to Honda for your next vehicle." The Japanese company "scored 78 out of 100 possible points on the annual Automaker Report Cards, closely followed by Toyota, at 75, and Subaru, at 72. There was a four-way tie for fourth, at 71 points, among BMW, Mazda, Nissan, and Volkswagen." Autoblog carries the full list of winners in a Consumer Reports press release.
