Barack Obama
As voters hit the polls Tuesday, many may want to know whether their candidates practice what they preach. Both Democratic presidential candidates claim to be green. Are they?
It turns out that the two could not be more different in their choice of cars, according to reports.
Car and Driver says Hillary Clinton drives a Mercury Mariner Hybrid, a small SUV that gets 34 mpg in city driving. The Mariner Hybrid is a cousin to the same Ford Escape Hybrid reportedly driven by Al Gore and John Edwards. This doesn't necessarily mean Mrs. Clinton is aligned with Democratic voters, however. In our own U.S. News Rankings & Reviews web survey, only 20 percent of Democrat respondents say they drive an SUV, compared with nearly 30 percent of Republicans.
Barack Obama picked the Chrysler 300C sedan as his running mate, according to Car and Driver. The 300C is a gas guzzler, relatively speaking, netting only 18 mpg in the city.
As for the Republican candidates, Car and Driver reports that John McCain gets around in a Cadillac CTS sedan, while the Chicago Tribune says Mike Huckabee drives a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV. Also according to the Tribune, Libertarian Ron Paul drives a Buick while in Washington and "a second-hand Lincoln car and Ford truck back home."
Perennial candidate Ralph Nader has long claimed that he doesn't even own a car. If anyone knows otherwise, kindly let us know here.
