The AP reports, "Kyle Busch gave Toyota its first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory after he drove from the pack in the waning laps Sunday to win the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway." The win marks "first NASCAR victory by a foreign manufacturer since Al Keller drove a Jaguar to a road course win in Linden, N.J., in June 1954."
Bloomberg adds, "Toyota started racing in the elite Sprint Cup Series last season." Yesterday's race was the automaker's 40th NASCAR start.
Toyota's entry into NASCAR was controversial. In the Auto Racing blog for the Boston Globe, Chris Estrada writes, "Toyota, the Japanese auto manufacturer and the supposed scourge of those who believe in an All-American NASCAR, won its first Sprint Cup Series race in Hampton, Ga. And somehow, someway, the world is still standing"
Top Gear notes that Busch team mate and fellow Toyota driver Toney Stewart finished second, giving the make its first 1-2 finish. "Perhaps Toyota Camrys are cool after all?" Autoblog adds, "Looks like it's gonna be a good year for the imports in NASCAR."
