Small Cars, Big Features

The Detroit News reports, “Small cars took on starring roles at the New York Auto Show this week as automakers jockeyed to show their tiny vehicles are not just easy on gas, but big on features, comfort and style.”  The 2009 Honda Fit, for instance, now offers “features common to SUVs: satellite-linked navigation system, easy-to-stow rear seats and enhanced safety features.”  Other automakers are pursuing similar products.  “GM's Saturn Astra and Ford's planned Fiesta intend to bring European refinement to American compact buyers.”  As consumers react to escalating gas prices, “analysts predict small cars will continue to be a growth area, even as overall U.S. vehicle sales decline.”  But, “As small cars become as chic in some circles as toy poodles, more buyers who could afford a larger car are demanding better features and more comfort.”

The San Francisco Chronicle names its “best affordable tech cars,” and three of the four vehicles it singles out for high-tech content are compacts.  The 2008 Ford Focus SES, for instance, is cited for “one of the most sophisticated media and communications interfaces available,” and a purchase price under $17,000.  The 2008 Volvo C30 is praised for “a premium audio system with superb surround sound.”

Ohio’s Dayton Daily News comments, “It's not much of a stretch to suggest that many of today's cars and trucks pack more in the way of advanced technology than did the original piloted space flights.”
