2009 Hummer H2 to be Ethanol-Capable

Texas' Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports, "General Motors Corp... is pushing forward with its plan for half its new-car fleet to run on a high ethanol-blended fuel."  Though the "use of corn-based ethanol has been criticized recently because some studies suggest that it could result in nearly twice the greenhouse-gas emissions as the gasoline it would replace," GM's director of energy and environment Mary Beth Stanek, said "We did our own investigation. There is no way we could market a socially irresponsible product."

The General has announced plans to make its most notorious gas guzzlers -- the Hummer H2 and H2 SUT --  ethanol capable for 2009.  "By 2010, GM has said all Hummers will be biofuel-capable," reports Autoblog. "GM plans to market 15 Flexfuel models next year, but only one percent of the country's service stations sell E85."

The move comes despite the widely predicted death of the H2 in response to changing fuel economy laws.

The Car Connection quotes Hummer General Manager Martin Walsh saying, "A Hummer's off-road capability and care for the environment are in no way mutually exclusive. This is simply one more step in our effort to promote responsible adventure."
