Motor Trend reports that the hardtop Pontiac Solstice Targa we profile here last month “could be advertised at 300 horsepower or more some time after it arrives in showrooms early next year, posing a serious threat to the upcoming 2010 Nissan 370Z, which Pontiac lists as a competitor.” The Solstice currently tops out at a turbocharged 260 horsepower, putting it just a little short of competing with true performance cars like the Nissan 350Z (soon to be the 370) and Infiniti G37. The 300-hp option will come “courtesy of more turbo boost, intercooling and a new fuel rail,” and “will be available in the GXP convertible, too” but “only with the manual gearbox in either coupe or convertible.”
Autoblog notes, “This is just a rumor at this point, but MT seems pretty confident in its validity.” Motor Trend “does not mention if the higher-output mill will appear in other applications, though we remember something about the Camaro possibly getting a turbo-four mill as an option, and a tuner-friendly option offering 300 galloping horsies in stock form would make for a very interesting option in the pony car.”
Automobile Magazine comments that the Targa “looks very good and will without doubt turn heads.”
