April Incentives Include Some Surprises

Automakers released their March sales figures this week, and almost across the board, they suffered one of their worst months in a decade.  Some are rolling out new rebates and discount offers in an attempt to lure buyers back into showrooms.  We’ve already reported on loyalty discounts from GM and 0% financing from Chrysler.

Today, Kicking Tires reports, GM is attempting to lure those who don’t own a GM car with a discount offer just for them.  Non-GM owners are now “eligible for a $1,000 incentive on the newly redesigned 2008 Chevy Malibu.”  The offers is known in the car business as “conquest cash,” because “the company hopes to woo drivers who own one of the competition’s cars.”

The Detroit Free Press reports that, in addition to its 0% financing offer for customers with good credit, “Chrysler this month plans to introduce a special 6.9% financing rate for people with B-tier credit.”  According to Steve Landry, Chrysler executive vice president for North American sales, “A year ago, people with such credit would have been receiving financing at about 12% or higher.”

In an unusual move, Ford will extend incentive offers to special editions of some vehicles.  Autoblog reports that an April incentive package on the Ford Mustang will also apply to the limited edition Mustang Bullitt.  The Bullitt is a badgeless Mustang in dark highland green meant as a tribute to the car Steve McQueen drove in the 1968 film Bullitt, which has a cult following among car enthusiasts.  Ford will offer $1,500 cash back on any Mustang, and in some parts of the country, an additional $1,000 to finance the car through Ford Motor Credit.  Autoblog comments, “With the potential of $2,500 in rebates, the $3,310 cost of the Bullitt package sounds like a pretty good deal is reduced to just $810.”  Ford also plans to offer a discount on its 2008 Ford F-150 Chip Foose Edition.

Kicking Tires says that, of all the April incentives announced this week, “so far the deals coming from Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep are the most jaw-dropping.”  The largest discount so far?  “The Dodge Magnum, which is being discontinued. It’s still a lot of car for the money, especially with some regions seeing total cash back of $4,000, with $2,000 in additional regional cash-back. That drops the $24,120 MSRP to $18,120 or almost 25% off.”
