The Detroit News reports that “Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 539,500 2003 and 2004 model year Matrix and Corolla cars to replace bolts in the front power windows.” The recall only affects models with power windows.
According to the AP, “Toyota said Wednesday it had received reports of 143 cases in which the bolts at the bottom of the power window assembly became loose, caused the window to rattle or led to the window breaking.” According to Toyota spokesman Joe Tetherow, the automaker knows of “one minor accident and 15 injuries reported” due to the defect. Toyota says that, if a window bolt has become loose, owners “may hear an abnormal noise from the driver or front passenger door while operating the power windows.”
Toyota will send a mailing to owners of affected vehicles later this month, but if you own an ’03-’04 Matrix or Corolla, there’s no need to wait. Bring the vehicle to your dealer or call Toyota at (800) 331-4331. Dealers should replace the bolts at no charge.
