Motor Trend has driven the new 2009 Honda Pilot, a ground-up redesign of Honda's most popular SUV. The verdict? "It's still no MDX; but those who genuinely prefer comfortable, controlled cruising to high-intensity corner-carving will love the 2009 Pilot's even more surefooted demeanor and improved ride." All versions of the new Pilot are powered by the same engine, "a purpose-tuned version of the 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC V-6 introduced in the 2008 Accord." It's a tri-mode engine that can "operate on three, four, or all six cylinders, depending on load." The engine is rated for 17/23mpg, and sips regular, not premium. "In a time when rising fuel prices loom ominously over all players in its segment, the Pilot's powertrain enhancements deliver tangible economy and emissions benefits."
Edmunds Inside Line approves of the changes as well. "It's the interior that counts in a utility vehicle anyway, and this is the Pilot's strength," Edmunds writes. "Honda engineers…managed to carve out some useful storage nooks throughout the interior." With under-floor storage bins and easy-folding seats, "you can flip, slide, fold or tumble almost everything, creating a magic box of miraculous space-efficiency."
Autoblog doesn't like the look, calling it a "rather barn-like shape." However, they find, "Setting aside the Pilot's appearance, the new unit is generally a much better vehicle than the 2008 model."
