Edmunds Auto Observer reports that, in "yet another sign consumer interest is turning from horsepower to fuel economy: the hybrid-electric version of the Toyota Camry, one of the nation’s best-selling cars, is outselling V6-powered Camrys by a solid margin." Four-cylinder Camry models still outsell both the V6 and Hybrid editions. Still, the new data marks the first time that a hybrid has outsold its higher-performance gasoline-only counterpart.
Autoblog Green says "When sales of the Prius and the Camry Hybrid are combined, Toyota easily remains the world's leader in hybrid vehicle sales and appears a lock to remain that way, at least for the next few years."
Interest in hybrids remains strong despite considerable debate over whether they are worth the extra investment. Small cars, however, remain the hottest-selling segment of the U.S. auto market.
