2009 Cadillac CTS-V Sets Speed Record

GM engineers building the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, a high-performance edition of the CTS luxury sedan, have been telling the automotive press that they intend to make the fastest production sedan in the world.  Late last week, they provided stunning evidence that they may have done just that.

Edmunds Inside Line explains, "Cadillac announced today that the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V has run a 7:59.32 lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife."  The Nürburgring, which Edmunds calls a "demanding 73-corner, 12.9-mile racetrack," is a proving ground many manufacturers use to test high-performance cars.  The Caddy's lap is believed to be a record for a production sedan.

For comparison purposes, AutoWeek points out that the CTS-V's time is barely 3 seconds slower than the Corvette Z06's best posting.  Yes, this four-door family Sedan can pretty much keep up with the last performance edition of the 'Vette.  "The fastest lap time by a production car at the historic track is believed to be 6:55, set in September 2005 by a car made by British company Radical."

According to a GM press release, the car that set the record "was equipped exactly as planned for consumer production, which is scheduled to begin this fall."

Jalopnik says the CTS-V achieved the feat with the help of "a projected 567 HP, tightened suspension, magnetic ride control, fancy-pants electro-mechanical rear end and a bodacious six speed."

Pricing has not been formally announced.  Autoblog notes that the first production CTS-V sold at auction last month for $75,000, but that is "likely a bit more than the CTS-V will cost at the dealership."

Let's hope the price didn't go up with the press release this time.
