Few in the automotive press seem to know what to make of BMW's new X6 "Sports Activity Coupe," but the car/truck/'ute/whatever-it-is is already a hit. If you want one, you'll probably have to sign up for a waiting list.
Motor Trend explains, " the X6's entire first year production run has already sold out." BMW plans to make 40,000 SACs in 2008, and "CEO Norbert Reithofer has announced that every X6 the factory will build this year has already been purchased by a dealer. This doesn't necessarily mean that the vehicle is sold out at showrooms (though many have long wait lists), just that the automaker's 2008 production quota has been filled."
There may still be a little time to grab one. Jalopnik says "there are still a smattering of vehicles available at some dealers," and Kicking Tires reports, " there are at least a few hundred nationwide still available for sale."
So what exactly is the X6? No one knows for sure.
The vehicle has a sporty, sport-sedan-like body atop an SUV's chassis, with the ground clearance of a midsize 'ute. BMW calls it a "Sport Activity Coupe," but a coupe it ain't…it has four doors. The engine that will power lower trim-levels of it, we should note, won the International Engine of the Year prize last week. BMW says it is rated for 15/20 mpg, so putting the sporty body on an SUV platform didn't produce a high-mileage SUV. It's not exactly clear what it did produce -- except for a hot seller.
Truck Trend has an interesting take, arguing, "The X6 proves is the auto business has long ceased to be about transportation. The auto business is really a fashion business. The X6 exists only because BMW's marketing mavens are convinced there are enough of you out there who want an SUV that thinks it's a coupe."
Whatever you call it, you can compare it to…well…to whatever you think the frankenbimmer competes with at U.S. News rankings and reviews.com.

With auto sales on the decline now is the time to get a great deal on a new car. Check out our
