The Detroit News reports, "Ford Motor Co. is recalling more than 655,000 Ford F-150 and Lincoln Mark LT pickup trucks to fix a hose that could affect the vehicles’ braking power." The recall affects 2005-06 model year trucks with 5.4-liter engines. According to a Ford spokesman, there are more than 600,000 affected vehicles in the U.S., another 50,000 in Canada, and 1,500 in other countries.
Reuters explains, "The brake hose on those trucks can detach from an intake manifold, causing the driver to lose the "assist" function that provides additional power to the brakes." The defect does not cause the brakes to fail -- a truck with a defective brake assist system can still be stopped, but its driver would have to apply more force to the brake pedal than they have become accustomed to.
According to the recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "The recall is expected to begin on or about July 7, 2008." In the meantime, owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
