Chrysler Extends $2.99 Gas Offer

Despite taking a beating in the automotive press, Chrysler's $2.99 gas offer seems to be working.  Reuters reports, "Chrysler said on Monday it will extend a sales incentive that allows U.S. car buyers to lock in fuel purchases at $2.99 per gallon, saying the offer had succeeded in driving customers to visit its dealerships and consider making a purchase."  The automaker says "retail sales for May are tracking 15 percent higher than April, largely because of the incentive."

According to Autoblog, Chrysler claims that, "the vehicles with the highest take rate are the most fuel efficient ones in the company's lineup like the Dodge Caliber, Journey, Avenger and Chrysler Sebring. The states in which the program is most popular are California, Connecticut, Indiana, Ohio and Washington.

The decision will keep the offer active through the busy July 4 weekend, traditionally a summer peak for auto sales.

Kicking Tires comments, "It’s a brilliant bit of marketing -- gas is on every potential car buyer’s mind these days."  It's not a brilliant decision for car buyers, however.  KT says, "After we dusted off our math skills, we found the deal to be slightly less bang for the buck than Chrysler’s former cash incentives. Those offered up to $2,500 cash back on some models before last month, when they were lowered to $1,000."
