Will GPS Navigation take a bite into Apple's iPhone?

Apple's iPhone could already do just about everything short of your taxes, but GPS capability was conspicuously missing. With a new crop of iPhones imminent, speculation has been mounting that Steve Jobs will debut a new iPhone with global positioning technology at next week's Worldwide Developers Conference, where he will give the keynote address.

As IntoMobile reports, "Most modern smartphones sport a GPS. iPhone is an exception, but that's about to change. Or at least we hope that will be the case."

According to GigaOm, the rumors are true. "The company supplying the GPS to iPhone is going to be a big winner in this space; according to my sources, the contract has been nailed down by Broadcom, a relatively new entrant into the GPS market."

Although Crave notes, "Rumors of GPS capabilities inside the forthcoming iPhone trickled out earlier this month," nothing concrete will be known until the actual device is unveiled June 9.

If and when GPS is added to iPhone, it will be interesting to see the ripple effect to other smartphones and portable GPS. Popular Mechanics states marriage of GPS and iPhone was already a no-brainer, because of the device's 3.5-inch touchscreen, external speakers, and Google Maps integration. "All you'd need to add to a GPS-enabled iPhone is a suction-cup windshield bracket…and you'd have a fully functional, pocket-portable car navigation device."
