Yes, Your Rearview Mirror is Talking To You

According to Jalopnik, "Integrating a GPS navigation system in the rearview mirror is an idea that will make any neat-freak happy." Well obsessive-compulsive drivers can now rejoice -- a partnership between Swiss technology company u-blox and the German electronics company Paragon has created the MirrorPilot, the first rearview mirror integrated navigation system.

According to Edmunds, the MirrorPilot will be introduced at the consumer electronics trade show CeBIT next March. It's a self-dimming rearview with a 2.2-inch nav screen, antenna and speaker. Automobile.com says, "Unlike most console mounted navigation systems, data input is done via a convenient handheld remote, which can be operated while the vehicle is in motion by passengers."

According to Tuvie's review, the device's genius lies in convenience. "You don't have to worry about any cables and suction cups all over the place. You won't have to worry about charging the device either or thieves braking your windows for it."

Or at least, let's hope so. The MirrorPilot is expected to retail in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for more than $1000, so its theft would really hurt.

Jalopnik says it might not be worth the money to you anyway. "As a GPS receiver, it's pretty mediocre," they write, before noting, "A big downside has to be the size. … you need to squint if you want to reach your destination without getting lost or having an accident."

Automobile.com also worries about safety, saying the MirrorPilot's handheld remote "has sparked a bit of debate over whether or not its use promotes driver distraction."

On the bright side, Ubergizmo says the device is good for you if you like staring at your own image while driving. As they write, "The next time you gape aghast at a newly sprouted pimple, fret not about arriving at your destination."
