Reuters reports, "The high price of gasoline has some U.S. drivers looking to the future. A recently introduced service called MyGallons.com allows drivers to fill up their tanks sometime in the future but at current prices, using a debit-like card which banks gallons rather than dollars." Company founder Steven Verona told Reuters he started MyGallons because "The price of gasoline was changing all the time," but "it seemed there had to be a way to fix the price." Launched in January, the company claims 2,000 members today.
Minnesota Fox affiliate KMSP explains, "To pre-purchase fuel, you log-in to your MyGallons.com account to buy gas at the current listed price, plus applicable local taxes. When you’re logged in, you can also view how many gallons you have left, look at your transaction history and find the current price for purchasing more gas."
Members pay a $29.95 annual membership fee, and a $15 overdraft fee if they go over their prepaid balance at the pump.
MyGallons claims that more than 200,000 gas stations nationwide participate in its program.
