Reuters reports, "General Motors Corp is rushing to finish the production version of its Chevy Volt and plans to unveil a showroom-ready model of the heavily touted electric car in September, people familiar with the project say."  The automaker, "battered by a deepening slump in sales and concerns about whether it can ride out the downturn…is counting on the Volt to break its costly association with gas-guzzling vehicles at a time when truck sales are tumbling and gas prices are near record levels."  The company hopes to have the Volt on the market for the 2010 model year, but the project has been plagued with delays and fluctuations in price.

Motor Trend adds, "Despite several setbacks, development of the Extended Range Electric Vehicle is now going smoothly, and after driving a prototype GM's vice-chairman Bob Lutz recently said there was "almost no reasonable doubt" that the project would make its late-2010 deadline. Though it will most likely cost $10,000 more than originally planned and only be built in limited numbers until 2012."

Daily Tech notes, "According to sources familiar with the Volt program, GM is working overtime to ready a production version of the vehicle to celebrate its 100th anniversary on September 16. Although it’s highly possible that GM could pull off showing a production version of the Volt within the next few months, the vehicle still won't arrive at dealerships until 2010 at the earliest."
