The British International Auto Show opens next week, and for 2008 it indeed goes "international." While U.S. automakers are struggling, a tiny Mexico-city based automaker plans to introduce its first high-end sports car in London next week, and while no one has yet driven a working prototype, the little car puts some impressive numbers on paper.
Top Gear reports, "The Mastretta MXT - the first car ever designed and built in Mexico," will make its first appearance at the London show. The car is a two-seater weighing in at less than a ton, but "powered by a two-liter turbocharged Duratec engine developing 240bhp." Mastretta claims its little car will "hit 60mph in 'under five seconds', which sounds plausible given the power and weight claims."
Motor Trend reports, "The small but muscular shape features a variety of functional scoops and vents that are said to provide significant road holding aerodynamic grip, as well as sufficient cooling to the mid-mounted engine," which is sourced from Ford. "The car is presently completing a variety of European safety and emissions tests and is expected to arrive at UK showrooms early next year. All 80 Mastretta MXTs scheduled to be built in the car's first year this January are slated for the right hand drive British market. Mastretta plans to certify the MXT for U.S. and other world markets in the coming years."
