Project Eagle Gets a Name: 2010 Lotus Evora

The much-hyped Lotus Project Eagle finally has a name.  Good Luck figuring out what it means.

Unveiled at the British Motor Show yesterday, Lotus's attempt to build a more practical supercar has officially been named the Lotus Evora.

AutoWeek says the term "refers to 'evolution' and 'aura'--two words that describe the new 2+2."

Car Magazine, however, says the Evora was "named after a town in Portugal."

To confuse onlookers further, Lotus has apparently been running a viral marketing campaign for the Evora for several months.  Mother Proof notes that "faceless people, who were wearing a mask that wiped out all of their facial features, have been seen at various events in England this summer," including the recently concluded Wimbledon tennis tournament.  "Speculation about their identity came to an end today: It was a creepy -- but strangely effective -- viral campaign for the Lotus Evora with the tagline 'true character in a faceless world.'"

So the car is designed to celebrate the aura of a town in Portugal where people have no facial features…no, we're just confused.  We'll stick reporting on the car.

Autoblog says the Evora is " a mid-engine, 2+2 coupe (a convertible is planned) with 3.5L V6 sourced from Toyota but elevated by Lotus above its humble origins to produce 276 horsepower. The car weighs just 2,976 lbs., which might be a lot for a Lotus but is well below the average weight of most cars. The interior is unlike any you've seen from this automaker, which is to say that occupying one won't be like staying in a hostel compared to a four-star hotel. You've got leather all around, a nav system, and Lotus promises ingress and egress have been vastly improved over its other models."

AutoWeek says that, beyond the base model Evora, a high-performance variant is planned.  "The hotter Evora is expected to feature a forced-induction version of the 3.5-liter V6, possibly supercharged, and is likely to push peak power to well over 300 hp."  Pricing has not been announced.
