Automobile Magazine reports, "It's official - the first Korean hybrid vehicle to arrive in the United States will be the 2010 Hyundai Sonata."  The Sonata will be the first hybrid Hyundai sells in the U.S., but the second it has built.  "An Accent Hybrid model will be offered to select customers in Korea in 2009."

Next Autos notes, "Vice president for product development John Krafcik says that the Sonata Hybrid should be launched sometime within the 2010 calendar year."

The car will make its first appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, according to Edmunds Inside Line.

The International Herald Tribune reports, "The hybrid Sonata can be powered by both gas and electric motors and will have new lithium-ion batteries."  All hybrids currently on sale in the U.S. use less-efficient nickel-metal hydride batteries, but several automakers now claim to have produced working Li-ion cells, which may enable future hybrids to rely on their electric motors more than their gasoline engines, significantly improving their range and fuel economy.  Hyundai has provided no details on the Sonata hybrid's capabilities.
