General Motors has issued a recall for more than 850,000 vehicles due to an electrical problem that could lead to a fire. The recalled vehicles are all large or midsize GM SUVs manufactured after 2006, equipped with a heated washer fluid system to keep washer fluid from freezing.
According to a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "A short circuit on the printed circuit board for the washer fluid heater may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. This may cause other electrical features to malfunction, create an odor or cause smoke. In rare cases, it may cause a fire."
The recalled vehicles include: the 2008 Buick Enclave, 2006-2008 Buick Lucerne, 2006-2008 Cadillac DTS, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade (including ESV and EXT models), 2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, 2007-2008 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL, 2006-2008 Hummer H2 and 2007-2008 Saturn Outlook.
GM dealers will install a new wiring harness in recalled vehicles, free of charge, which should eliminate the risk of fire. The company, however, has not said when dealers will begin contacting owners about the recall. Owners who wish to make their own arrangements may contact Buick at 1-866-608-8080; Cadillac at 1-800-982-2339; Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; Saturn at 1-800-972-8876; GMC at 1-866-996-9436; or Hummer at 1-800-732-5493.
