General Motors is recalling almost 300,000 Chevrolet HHR vehicles -- every wagon sold since 2006 -- due to a defect that may cause dashboard storage bins to open in the event of an accident. This could prove hazardous, as it might allow objects stored in the bins to become projectiles during a crash.
If you own an HHR, get out your toolbox. A recall acknowledgement filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains, "Owners will receive a latch reinforcement along with installation instructions." For those who don't wish to do the work themselves, Chevrolet dealers should install the latch reinforcement free of charge, but you may have to bring the part to them -- it will be mailed to owners, not dealerships.
This marks the second safety recall for the HHR this year.
Owners should expect to receive the part in the mail during the month of November. Chevrolet can be contacted at 1-800-630-2438, or online at http://www.gm.com/recall.
