The Wall Street Journal reports that this week, " Dan Towbin-whose dealerships grabbed national attention as the backdrop for an A&E television series called "King of Cars"-will close his Hummer dealership, one of the brand's largest stores in the U.S. and the only one in Las Vegas."

The dealership has been unable to sell the huge SUVs despite mind-boggling incentives this summer.  The Journal notes, "To move Hummers off the lot in August, buyers in the U.S. received an average of $8,861 in various incentives for each vehicle sold."

Kicking Tires comments, " if Hummer can't survive in Las Vegas, it may not be able to survive anywhere in the U.S," adding that "Towbin Hummer is at least the eighth Hummer dealership to close this year due to a radical consumer shift away from large SUVs in the face of high gas prices."

Don't cry for the King of Cars, though.  He's making the shift, even without GM.  The Journal reports, "He soon will open a Smart cars store in Las Vegas that will offer the hot-selling ultrasmall minicars unveiled in the U.S. this year."
