We've been telling you that an electric MINI Cooper was in the works since July, but until now, it's never been clear how to sign up to lease one of the cars. Yesterday, BMW's MINI division released the first details about the car, and today they've begun collecting applications for potential buyers. Well, potential lessees -- it won't be possible to buy one of the cars, just to lease them, which is common with experimental vehicles.

Kicking Tires reports, "you can sign-up for updates about the car," and complete "a test-drive application" at a new website created by MINI.  "There still isn't more information about what test drivers will do exactly: Will this be a long-term lease, an extended loan of a few weeks or an overnight test drive?"

The application is available at MINIspace.  The website notes that "Up to 500 test drivers in the US (Southern California, New York City and New Jersey) will get the chance to take the MINI E for a spin."  It isn't clear what they mean by that, but earlier reports said that MINI planned to lease 500 of the cars in those states -- so this may be the first chance to line up for the MINI E.  We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
