Chrysler is recalling 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro and 2008 Jeep Liberty vehicles equipped with manual transmissions over a parking brake defect that could cause a crash.  In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker explains, "the parking brake level clutch drum may distort and reduce the effectiveness of the parking brake system," which "could allow the vehicle to move inadvertently and cause a crash without warning."

Dodge and Jeep dealers will "replace the parking brake lever assembly on all affected vehicles" free of charge.  The automaker says that it also "has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem" that later leads to a recall.  Customers who have had parking brake work done on Nitro and Liberty models before the recall may present receipts for service at their dealerships and apply to have the expense reimbursed.

Dealers should begin contacting Nitro and Liberty owners this month, but those who wish to make their own arrangements can call Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.
