As automakers near collapse and beg Uncle Sam for a loan, they're introducing new incentives designed to lure buyers into showrooms at almost any cost. This morning, Ford has unveiled its latest price cuts and financing deals - a return to the "employee pricing" gimmick that boosted auto sales in the summer of 2005, with a twist - additional cash back on the company's most fuel-efficient models.
Autoblog explains, "Not only can you get the price employees pay, but Ford is also offering additional cash back on many of its models. Or you can get bonus zero-percent financing for 36 months plus the employee price instead of cash back if you choose one of Ford's nine most fuel efficient models in their class."
Details of the deal aren't entirely clear at the moment. Ford's website for the offer has not been updated to include actual prices, and reads vaguely that cash back offers will run "up to $6,000."
Kicking Tires cautions, "There are a couple of things to be aware of: The Employee Pricing offer does not include the 2009 Ford F-150, but 0% financing is available on that much-awaited model. As for the fuel-efficient discounts, be aware that 0% financing is not available on the 2008/2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid or the 2008/2009 Ford Escape Hybrid, even though those models technically fall into Ford's 'most fuel-efficient' language used to describe the deal."
