Black Fridays of yesteryear required an early morning start to get the best deals on holiday gifts. But dismal predictions for this year's shopping season has stores exploring a different angle -- full disclosure. When it comes to consumer electronics, stores are giving plenty of previews of what deals are waiting for you Nov. 28.
According to Forbes, online retailers are leading the lack. "Amazon is hosting a promotion that lets consumers vote on the deals they want the site to offer," they write. "Most of the deals are still pegged to Black Friday. ... What's changed is some retailers' willingness to advertise their Black Friday deals early -- a shift that shows how the economy is shaking up the usual holiday sales calendar."
Daniel de Grandpre, the CEO of the bargain-tracking site Dealnews suggests you abandon the traditional shopping venues to find real savings on electronics items. Instead of going to Best Buy or Wal-Mart, de Grandpre tells CNET the best deals will be in regional stores. "Look towards MicroCenter, Fry's Electronics, Meijer, and others for better Black Friday deals. MicroCenter's weekend sale has some outstanding deals," he says.
GPS makers are especially hoping to score this season. Wired reports, "Last year, GPS devices saw one of the most aggressive price discounts in electronics as retailers used the category as a 'loss leader', or a draw to get shoppers to loosen their purse strings."
Traditionally, 50 percent of total GPS sales occur in the fourth quarter, a statistic most are hoping is duplicated for 2008. GPSLodge says, "the economy stinks, but deals on GPS navigation systems have never been better as the innovations continue to roll in and the prices continue to roll back."
This year's strategy? Introducing pricing on the basic models for less than $100. TomTom GPS is advertising a TomTom ONE 125 for just $99 through Amazon, while Garmin is pushing its nuvi 200 for $97 at Wal-Mart.
