Mecha-Godzilla Spotted: Nissan GT-R Spec V Unveiled

Apparently, Nissan is disappointed with the Motor Trend Car of the Year. The Automobile Magazine Car of the Year. The car that won Popular Mechanics' Best of What's New award. The car that broke a long-standing speed record at the world's fastest test track. The car that caused Porsche to sputter accusations of cheating. The car they just call "Godzilla" - the monster from Japan that dethroned million-dollar supercars with a price tag of just $80,000.

Yes, the 2009 Nissan GT-R was apparently a letdown.

So they've built a faster one.

Call it Mecha-Godzilla. The 2010 Nissan GT-R Spec V, long a rumor, is now officially for sale in Japan.

Motor Trend reports, "Nissan hasn't said what kind of performance we can expect from this limited-production model, but there are some clues. To become the Spec-V, the GT-R had to go on a diet, something we felt the 3891-lb car definitely needed to do. A generous helping of carbon-fiber and other lightweight materials have found their way on to the Spec-V, though Nissan has yet to say just how much weight was saved."

Autoblog details the weight-saving measures. "The body mods consist of a carbon fiber rear spoiler, grille and brake ducts, along with an exclusive Ultimate Black Opal paint job," they report. "On the inside, a set of carbon fiber Recaro buckets are fitted up front, while the rear seats have been nixed to save a few pounds. Carbon fiber also adorns the center storage box, instrument panel and replaces the majority of the interior trim."

The engine, incredibly, is almost unmodified. Edmunds Inside Line explains that the only significant change is the addition of "a high-gear boost control device to enhance mid-to- high-speed torque," which supplements existing turbochargers with compressed oxygen. The Spec-V does get "a titanium-coated exhaust system and carbon-ceramic brakes...suspension upgrades and rides on special high-grip tires mounted on Nismo forged aluminum racing-style wheels."

Want one? You're out of luck. Jalopnik reports that the car will only be sold at "seven specially selected Nissan dealerships in Japan" beginning next month, "for 15,750,000 yen. That's a bit over $160,000."
