UPDATE: Fox News now reports that an "explosive device" has been found at the scene of the incident, so the initial media reports that the hybrid vehicle was to blame appear innaccurate.
CNN.com is reporting that a respected Arkansas physician was critically injured today when his hybrid-powered Lexus RX400h, allegedly, exploded. "police do not believe foul play was involved, saying the incident could have been caused by a malfunction with Dr. Trent Pierce's hybrid Lexus SUV," the station reports.
We should stress that we are unaware of any previous reports of explosions in Lexus hybrid vehicles, and a local police chief's assessment that the vehicle triggered the blast is very preliminary. CNN notes that a bomb squad is currently investigating, so it will likely be some time before anyone is certain what caused the blast.
Memphis Fox-affiliate WHBQ reports, "West Memphis Police Chief Bob Paudert stated in a press conference that no foul play is suspected, and that ‘mechanical failure' of the vehicle is probably to blame. Paudert also said that the blast from the explosion was felt as far as a mile away.
Dr. Price, the chairman of the Arkansas Medical Board, has reportedly been airlifted to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown.
CNN notes that "authorities have not determined there was an explosion but have confirmed a fire." We will bring you updates as we have them.
