Hyundai Bringing Super-Luxury Equus Sedan to U.S.

Will Americans buy a $75,000 Hyundai?  The Korean automaker thinks so.  Given the success of the Hyundai Genesis, the Korean automaker apparently believes we will.

USA Today reports that Hyundai is "toying with the idea of moving up in price point again - to $75,000 sedans. It's exploring whether the Equus, an updated large sedan that just went on sale in South Korea, can take on the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Lexus LS 460L in America."

The company showed the Equus at the New York Auto Show last month, triggering speculation that the car might be coming stateside.  Now, Autoblog reports, "The plucky Korean automaker plans to ship 100 Hyundai Equus sedans to the States for display at dealerships throughout the country in order to gauge public reaction."  The cars will not yet be offered for sale.

USA Today reports, "The larger Equus uses the same 4.6-liter, 375-horsepower V-8 as is found in Genesis."

However, it is decidedly a more luxurious car.  Autoblog reports, "The Equus would go head-to-head with such luxury stalwarts as the BMW 7 series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Lexus LS460," but with an anticipated $75,000 price tag, would undercut those cars on price - a well-equipped S-Class or 7-Series costs over six figures.
