Forgive General Motors Vice Chairman and product development czar Bob Lutz. He's bound to let something slip now and then. He's already announced his retirement, working only through the end of 2009, and sold his stake in the company. If he speaks off the cuff on something GM keeps close to its vest, it's understandable.
But, to a certain community of people, Lutz just dropped a bomb. He put a price on the 2011 Chevy Volt.
Kicking Tires explains, "For the past year, the company has hedged its bets, saying the Volt would be between $35,000 and $40,000." Then, Wednesday night, Lutz appeared on Late Night with David Letterman to discuss the car. He defended the Volt against criticism leveled at it on Letterman's show recently. He also "talked price, but he talked price including a government tax credit of $7,500. The final cost would be $32,500, but that means a sticker price of $40,000."
USA Today explains, "The car is on track to debut late next year, but Lutz says it won't show up in any real numbers in showrooms until 2011."
