Recall Alert: Kia Optima

Kia is recalling about 36,000 Optima sedans from model years 2001 through 2004 located in several states to correct a defect that could lead to a number of serious structural problems.

In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker explains, "Road salt applied in these states during the winter months may result in progressive, internal corrosion of the subframe.  Over time, such subframe corrosion near the connection to the lower control arm can lead to wheel misalignment and/or other noticeable stress in steering, or accelerated abnormal tire wear."  Ultimately, the problem "could lead to wheel separation, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash."

States affected by the recall including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

Kia dealers will inspect recalled cars, and if necessary, repair the subframe free of charge.  Dealers are expected to contact owners through the mail this month, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542.
