Survey: New York City Drivers Love Obscene Gestures

You will die. You will be taxed. The sun will rise in the morning. And if you drive in New York City, someone will lay on their horn behind you and give you the one-finger salute. These things are certain.

To prove the last one, we have the results of a recent survey.

Kicking Tires explains, "An AutoVantage survey asked drivers about the courteousness of their fellow road warriors, and New York came out on top for the city with the most road rage."

Okay, that one you expected. The top five, though, includes at least one that will probably surprise you. America's surliest drivers also love Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit, and...Minneapolis/St. Paul? Really?

New York, we should note, also has the nation's worst drivers...at least, according to another survey.

Autoblog, however, notes: "Something must have set off those finger-waving commuters. And that would have been all the other drivers out there who are talking on their phones, tailgating, eating, emailing and checking Autoblog on their netbooks and iPhones. Those people, the survey says, are the ones getting on the nerves of the short-fused."

So what can you do if you want to drive in peace? Move to the land of coffee shops on every corner and constant rain, apparently. The UPI notes that the most courteous driving city in the survey's results was Portland, Oregon. "It was followed by Cleveland, Baltimore, Sacramento and Pittsburgh, the company said."

If you are among those prone to road rage, you might want to consider a move to a more calming area. After all, Kicking Tires notes, seven percent of survey respondents say they call the police in response to rude driving behavior, "while 1% confessed they slam the offending car."

We want to know what they put in the water in Baltimore. That city ranked as the fourth rudest in America last year, and the third most courteous this year.
