The 2010 cars have just begun to roll into showrooms, but already the automotive press is preparing to pick the best of them.
Edmunds Inside Line reports, "The so-called ‘long list' of candidates for the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year was revealed late Monday." The list is remarkable for "its even division among automakers from Japan, Europe and the U.S," and its lack of any Chrysler products.
Last year, the Car of the Year award went to the Hyundai Genesis, while the Ford F-150 took home Truck of the Year.
Motor Authority comments, "This year's candidates, announced late on Monday, have once again proven controversial." They include "Suzuki's upcoming midsize sedan based on the Kizashi concept, a vehicle that is yet to even be confirmed for sale." Similarly, the Honda Crosstour and Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon are nominees even though no member of the press has ever driven those cars. A jury "comprised of automotive journalists based in North America and will need to whittle down the list in advance of the announcement of the winners in January. To be eligible, a vehicle must be ‘all new' or ‘substantially changed' from the previous model."
2010 North American Car of the Year nominees:
BMW 5-series GranTurismo
Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon
Suzuki Kizashi
2010 North American Truck of the Year nominees:
Ford Transit Connect
Honda Crosstour (name to be officially announced/confirmed later)
