Report: Four Versions of Fiat 500 Coming Stateside

The little Fiat 500 is one of Europe's most popular cars.  Similar to the Mini Cooper, it's a retro-inspired three-door hatchback with nearly endless customization options that trades on cuteness and fun as much as fuel economy.  When Fiat bought Chrysler, auto industry insiders wondered if the little 500 would reach the U.S., filling a need no Chrysler product can meet.

Now, we have our answer.  We'll get four styles of the little thing by 2011.

Autoblog reports, "That is the latest word out of Italy concerning the adorable Fiat 500. While the Chrysler/Fiat merger chugs along, the tiny 500 is the only model that has been officially greenlighted for American consumption under the Fiat banner."  American buyers will be able to choose from four models - a hatchback, a convertible, a station wagon and a sport model.

The station wagon is news even to European buyers.  Motor Trend reports, "Its wheelbase has been stretched 3.1-in. to 93.7-in. total. As it stands, the current hatchback is 33-in longer than a Smart Fortwo and 10-in. shorter than a Toyota Yaris."

The hottest anticipation, however, will surround the sporty version, known as the Abarth 500.  Left Lane News reports, "The Abarth-badged 500 should give MINI Cooper S shoppers a reason to consider the Fiat model."
