Cash for...Um...Camaros?

Most Americans who've traded in a gas guzzler under the federal government's Cash for Clunkers rebate program have purchased a new small or midsize car.  But that isn't necessary.  It is possible, Kicking Tires reports, to "trade in a clunker for a mean machine. Well, maybe not a top-of-the-line mean machine, but many fun-to-drive cars qualify, including the base version of the new Camaro."

The Los Angeles Times notes that, in order to qualify under the program, a new car must be rated for just 22 mpg in combined city and highway driving - which puts some surprisingly sporty rides in reach.  Their list of the top eight Cash for Sports Cars deals:

1) Chevy Camaro (V-6, automatic)

Horsepower: 304

MPG: 22

2) Chevy Cobalt SS

Horsepower: 260

MPG: 25

3) Pontiac Solstice GXP/Saturn Sky

Horsepower: 260

MPG: 23

4) Hyundai Genesis Coupe (4 cyl, turbo)

Horsepower: 210

MPG: 24

5) Volkswagen GTI

Horsepower: 210

MPG: 25

6) Honda Civic Si

Horsepower: 197

MPG: 24

7) Mini Cooper S

Horsepower: 172

MPG: 29

8) Volvo C30:

Horsepower: 227

MPG: 24

It's an impressive list, but we have to think the Times missed a few.  After all, BMW is now matching the government's rebate on the diesel-powered edition of its 3-Series.  The new 335D doesn't just make 265 horsepower - it lays down 425lb-ft of torque to throw you back into your seat - 152 more than even the Camaro.  The government won't just let you trade in a clunker on a 335D, it will also chip in another $900 because the car qualifies for a clean diesel tax credit.
