Now that Nissan has announced plans to sell a pure electric car in the U.S. next year, every automaker seems to be rushing an announcement of its own electric car. The latest entrant into the race? Sweden's Volvo.

The U.K.'s Autocar reports, "Volvo has confirmed it is working an all-electric C30." The company "will show a fully operational version of the all-electric C30" later this year." Autocar reports, "At the moment, the all-electric C30 is just a concept and Volvo has no current plans to put it into production."

Autoblog, however, notes that "Volvo has confirmed an upcoming plug-in hybrid version of its V70 wagon using an electric motor to power the rear wheels and a diesel engine to power the front. That car is expected to debut in full production form in 2012." A Volvo spokesman, pressed about whether the electric C30 could see production, called the car "an evaluation concept," adding "it's part of an ongoing evaluation and we will make a decision in the future."

The New York Times, meanwhile, quotes "a source who is pretty high up in the electric car industry and who has done some work with Volvo," saying he is "reasonably confident that the battery E.V. is a go." The unidentified source added, "I can't talk about it. Volvo is looking at quite a few alternatives."
