Mitsubishi has issued a recall notice for about 7,000 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Ralliart and Sportback Ralliart sedans from model years 2008 and 2009 in order to correct a fuel line defect that could lead to a vehicle fire. The recall applies only to vehicles equipped with turbocharged engines.
In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker explains, The manner in which the fuel return pipe is attached to the engine, in combination with frequent vehicle operation at certain engine revolutions, may result in a resonance that, if continued over time, may cause a stress crack to develop at the fixed portion of the fuel pipe." If the fuel pipe were to crack, fuel could leak from the system. "Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire."
Mitsubishi dealers will replace the fuel pipe in an attempt to correct the problem, free of charge. Dealers should begin contacting Lancer owners in late September, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements may contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.
