Overseas, Mazda sells a fun little hatchback with a lot of zoom-zoom and a lot of style called the Mazda2. But we don't get it here. Yet.
Autoblog reports, "That fantabulous little Mazda we've admired from afar for the past couple years, the Mazda2 (also known as the Demio in Japan), is coming to all of North America, the U.S. included." The 2, "which shares its platform with the also incoming Ford Fiesta, will go on sale in the U.S. around the end of 2010."
Edmunds Inside Line reports, "We'll be getting a car that has won numerous awards in Europe and Japan. Lightweight construction is often cited as the key advantage of the Mazda 2 over other subcompacts. Company engineers put considerable emphasis on cutting weight (without compromising safety) to improve fuel efficiency and performance." The result, European auto writers have said, is a delightfully fun and reasonably cheap subcompact that could give the Honda Fit a run for its money in the U.S. market.
Motor Trend reports, "Globally, the car is powered by 1.3L and 1.5L gasoline engines, or a 1.4L turbodiesel." Since Mazda has never sold a diesel engine stateside, we'd be surprised to see that last engine here -- but the others may make the trip.
