Urgent Recall Alert: Nissan Rogue

Posted: Oct. 27, 2009 09:10 a.m.

Nissan is recalling more than 150,000 Rogue SUVs from model years 2008 and 2009 in order to correct a defect that could result in a loss of steering control.

In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan explains, "A screw in the steering gear housing cover may loosen over time and could fall out. As it loosens, the steering response of the vehicle may be compromised but the driver will retain steering control."  If the screw falls out, "The pinion shaft may come out of the steering gear resulting in a complete loss of steering control and increasing the risk of a crash."

Nissan dealers will inspect affected vehicles, and tighten the screw to the proper specification if it is loose.  "Dealers will also install a cover plate to prevent the screw from possibly coming out of the steering gear."  The service will be performed free of charge.

Dealers will begin contacting Rogue owners next month, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
