In 2009, the battle for supremacy among muscle cars reached fever pitch. Dodge brought its Challenger back from the dead late in 2008. Chevrolet resurrected the Camaro. And, though Ford has never let its Mustang disappear, it refreshed the classic in order to stay competitive. Final sales figures are in, and it looks as though Ford won the battle – though only by a technical knock out.
Motor Trend reports, “In raw numbers, the Mustang fends off the upstart Camaro by selling 66,623 copies in 2009.” The Camaro’s April introduction, however, means that “the Mustang had three more months of sales.” Camaros actually outsold Mustangs every month that both cars were available. The Challenger was a distant third, with just 22,852 sold.
Autoblog adds, “Early on there was speculation that the Camaro could overtake the Mustang,” but Ford won out thanks to a strong December. For sold 60 percent more pony cars in December than it had the month before.
