Chrysler Says It Turned a profit in Q2

Some people may be on the lookout for flying pigs today.  Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne says the company turned a profit in the second quarter.

Automotive News reports, "Chrysler Group posted its second straight operating profit as the automaker continues to recover from its 2009 bankruptcy. The announcement was made today by CEO Sergio Marchionne in a call with analysts. He didn't say how much Chrysler earned. Specific numbers will be revealed on Aug. 9."

"In any case, this counts as phenomenal news for the struggling automaker," says Autoblog, noting that Chrysler "went through bankruptcy proceedings during the second quarter of 2009. Chrysler also posted an operating profit of $143 million in the first quarter, though one-time costs meant an overall loss of $197 million at that time."

Chrysler's change in fortune may be due to Fiat, which owns 20 percent of Chrysler. The Detroit Free Press points out that in the second quarter, Fiat "began distributing Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles in Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium. In May, Fiat and Chrysler began integrating their Chrysler and Lancia sales networks in Europe. This will lead to a new network of more than 1,000 dealerships throughout Europe by 2014."

The increased sales network is unlikely to hurt Chrysler's bottom line, even though Autoblog calls Chrysler's lineup "more than a little short on new products right now."
