GM's Bare Necessities Concept Cars -- You Don't Really Need Seats, Do You?

Posted: Aug. 12, 2009 11:08:34 a.m.

Yesterday, General Motors held a press conference outlining all of the new vehicles it plans to show off by the year 2012.  The list included luxurious huge Cadillacs, high-tech plug-in hybrids, and two new models, a car and a pickup truck, both so stripped down the passenger's seat may be an option.

GreenCarReports explains, "The two vehicles--a car and a truck--are meant to be maximally minimal... The idea is to improve the efficiency--not just gas mileage but the efficiency ...

GM: Chevy Volt Will Earn 230 MPG Rating

Posted: Aug. 11, 2009 10:08:26 a.m.

For the past week, an unexplained logo has been popping up all over the place. It's on billboards, websites and magazine ads - a green background, and in white, the number 230, with a smiling electrical outlet in place of the zero.

Today, we've learned what it means.

The Detroit Free Press reports, "The electric-drive Chevrolet Volt is expected to get a rating of at least 230 miles per gallon in city driving, General Motors Co. announced this morning ...

Report: Volvo Could Sell Electric C30

Posted: Aug. 11, 2009 10:08:23 a.m.

Now that Nissan has announced plans to sell a pure electric car in the U.S. next year, every automaker seems to be rushing an announcement of its own electric car. The latest entrant into the race? Sweden's Volvo.

The U.K.'s Autocar reports, "Volvo has confirmed it is working an all-electric C30." The company "will show a fully operational version of the all-electric C30" later this year." Autocar reports, "At the moment, the all-electric C30 is just ...

Coming Soon: Buick Plug-in Hybrid SUV

When General Motors announced plans to sell its Saturn division, it lost its most successful hybrid programs.  Though GM plans to continue building some vehicles for Saturn after the sale is complete, the General announced that its hybrids wouldn't be part of the sale.  The plan, apparently, meant the death of a plug-in hybrid SUV planned for the Saturn brand.

It's back, but under another name.

Edmunds Inside Line reports, "Buick -- one of the four remaining U.S ...

Nissan Leaf Electric Car On Sale Next Year

Posted: Aug. 07, 2009 11:08:36 a.m.

Nissan will become the first major automaker to offer an electric car for sale in the United States, offering its 2010 Leaf EV in five U.S. cities next year.

Autoblog reports, "The details of the car's U.S. launch were so slim at launch is because Nissan was waiting for the official announcement of the Obama administration's $2.4 billion investment into electric vehicles and the infrastructure needed to support them."  The administration awarded funding to build ...

Cash for...Um...Camaros?

Posted: Aug. 06, 2009 10:08:37 a.m.

Most Americans who've traded in a gas guzzler under the federal government's Cash for Clunkers rebate program have purchased a new small or midsize car.  But that isn't necessary.  It is possible, Kicking Tires reports, to "trade in a clunker for a mean machine. Well, maybe not a top-of-the-line mean machine, but many fun-to-drive cars qualify, including the base version of the new Camaro."

The Los Angeles Times notes that, in order to qualify under the program ...

Cash for Clunkers Will End Tuesday Unless Senate Acts

Posted: Aug. 03, 2009 11:08:00 a.m.

Have a clunker you're looking to trade in? Do it today. You may not have an opportunity tomorrow.

The Wall Street Journal reports, "Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Sunday that unless the Senate approves $2 billion in additional funding, the Obama administration could be forced to halt as early as Tuesday the ‘cash for clunkers' program that has become one of the most visible and fast-acting of the government's economic-stimulus programs." Americans apparently claimed most of the $1 ...

2011 Nissan Leaf: Nissan Unveils All-Electric Car

Posted: Aug. 03, 2009 11:08:47 a.m.

Nissan hasn't seemed anxious to lead the green car race. While other automakers worked to bring hybrid vehicles to the mainstream, Nissan has appeared to sit on the sidelines, content to offer only the Altima Hybrid, using a Toyota-built powertrain, in just a handful of states.

But Japan's third largest automaker, it seems, was simply biding its time.

The company may actually be the first major automaker to begin widespread sales of an all-electric car. The Nissan Leaf ...

The federal government's Cash for Clunkers program will live on through the weekend, White House officials told reporters today.  The House of Representatives, meanwhile, passed a measure to add an additional $2 billion to the program, before members adjourn this afternoon for an August recess.  The Senate is expected to take up the measure early next week, where its fate is uncertain.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters, "If you were planning on going to buy a ...

Breaking: Cash for Clunkers Will Run Through Weekend; Congress Works to Add Funds

Posted: Jul. 31, 2009 11:07:34 a.m.

"If you were planning on going to buy a car this weekend using [the federal 'cash for clunkers'] program, the program continues to run," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters this morning, according to the New York Times.  "If you meet the requirements of the program, the certificates will be honored."

The government's Cash for Clunkers rebate program has not been suspended, administration officials insist, despite media reports to the contrary.  Congress is considering additional funding in ...
